On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

A few months ago, two-year-old Esther arrived at our facility. There was no food in her family home and when her parents noticed that the girl was becoming weaker, not growing and losing weight, she arrived at our hospital. Esther could not have gotten better treatment. Our experts immediately took care of her. Malnutrition treatment lasts several weeks. There is still a long road to health ahead of Esther but the effects of therapy are noticeable today.

Little Esther is one of over 200 of our little patients who are currently getting a chance to regain their childhoods in Ntamugenga. During therapy, their caretakers learn about the basics of nutrition, food processing and running a simple backyard garden that will help them balance their childrens’ diets.
