Thanks to the Wonderful Hospice Team, Teresa Has Regained Her Strength

Rwanda

Rwanda is one of the smallest countries on the African continent, and the most densely populated one. There are around 463 inhabitants per 1km2 here! Due to its natural landscape, Rwanda is sometimes referred to as a land of a thousand hills, and due to its history, also a land of a thousand problems.

Overview:
  • around 12 million inhabitants
  • in 1994, it was a place of genocide – in 100 days, about 1 million people of the Tutsi tribe were murdered, 2 million escaped from the country
  • agricultural country – farming generates about 63% of income from export (including coffee, tea, bananas)
In 2023, we organized long-term palliative care for

Hospice care is not about facing the end but about healing and guiding people back onto a path they can continue to follow. Take Teresa’s story, for instance—her experience at our Kabuga facility feels like winning a second chance at life. Having nearly reached her end following a severe stroke, she believes that without the hospice, she wouldn’t be with us today. Here, she has managed to reset her clock.

Teresa has regained her strength thanks to the exceptional hospice team, benefiting from physiotherapy, a tailored diet, comfortable living conditions, and freedom from worries about tomorrow. It’s the only such place in Rwanda. While she loved to travel in her previous life, now she has no desire to leave this place.

She adores the staff and has taken a particular liking to one nurse, brightening up whenever he appears.

“What’s Kinshasa like?”, we ask. She pauses to gather her thoughts as memories vividly come to life before her. In her mind she’s transported to the capital of Congo, vividly painting the scenes she remembers.

Such conversations can last for hours. In Kabuga, Teresa feels not only cared for but truly heard.

We spend our days here laughing with patients and observing the lives of those who have become friends. Here, it’s not about dying; it’s about living fully until the very end. And we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s a place where you just want to be.

Help ensure every patient experiences the same! Your support has a tremendous impact. Fund another day of care and warmth for a patient in the Kabuga hospice.
