Thank you, you are true Superheroes

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 15,6 million people – 18% of the population suffer from hunger
  • 3,4 million children under 5 years are acutely malnourished
  • 41,8% million children under 5 years are stunted
  • 63,2% of children below 5 years of age and 41% of women  15-49 years are anemic
In 2023, we have saved approximately

550

people from starvation
We take in at least

80

children a week in our nutrition center

“These children, despite their malnutrition, are so beautiful… But in that beauty, in those eyes, there is such suffering – it gives you the creeps. You look into the eyes of a child and see an adult who has survived the worst. It’s sometimes three-year-olds for whom childhood is over.” says Agnieszka Gugała, placing a meal in front of little Kaleb. It’s already the second one, and there will be four of them today. Each of them funded by you. A piece falls off his fork and a tear seems to have formed in his eye.

But Kaleb is happy today, although still too weak to smile with childlike joy. He is out of hospital, and today nothing hurts him anymore. The only thing that remains is this desperate hunger and this sadness in his eyes, as if food would run out again. It is only thanks to you that we can guarantee that it will not run out. Thank you, you are true Superheroes.

Kaleb is already in his mother’s care, safe from the turmoil of war that is brewing somewhere further away – although not that far away. In Ntamugenga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation may change overnight, but Agnieszka remains at her post.

Kaleb still has months of nutritional therapy ahead of him. Only completing it can guarantee that the very painful digestive problems will not return and that a mosquito bite will not develop into acute malaria again. If you have the opportunity, please – share a meal with this brave little one. We are sure that he will soon return the favour with the most radiant childhood smile.
