"We are freezing! Help! Children are freezing!"

Ukraine

Since the escalation of the war in February 2022, until mid-October 2024, nearly 6.8 million refugees4 from Ukraine have been recorded – 92 per cent of them in Europe. Inside Ukraine, an estimated 3.6 million people5 remain internally displaced as of October 2024.

Among the most vulnerable are also an estimated 12.6 million as of March 2025 people who were not displaced from their homes but who have been directly affected by the war – they have been wounded, their homes have been destroyed, their family members died.

Civilian infrastructure, such as power grids, water supply networks. hospitals transportation infrastructure, have been targeted by the daily missile attacks, severely disrupting people’s lives across the whole country, and particularly in the East.

About 3 600 educational institutions, including nearly

2 000 schools,

have suffered damage with some 371 educational facilities totally destroyed since the escalation of the war.
There were over

2 100 attacks

on healthcare facilities, which have claimed at least 197 lives, including those of health workers and patients, and injured many more, severely disrupting health services.

“We are freezing! Help! Children are freezing!” Such inscriptions appeared on walls in Mariupol.

Ukraine desperately needs us again. More than ever before. The enemy is having trouble on the frontline. It has started to destroy the country’s infrastructure. Ukrainians are calling a spade a spade: “Moscow is trying to carry out energy genocide”. 40% of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure has been destroyed. This is going to be a difficult winter. We cannot get used to this atrocity.

There is no electricity in Kiev and water supplies are also limited. Almost half a million people are already without heating. Each attack means more residents cut off from electricity, water and heat. The mayor of Kiev does not rule out evacuating the capital – three million residents are in question.

Once again we are heading out to help the Ukrainians and once again what they need most is warmth. We never thought that our aid shipment would be paraffin lamps and camping rocket stoves. We are also packing sleeping bags and warm blankets.

The whole of eastern and central Ukraine is freezing. Up to one million Ukrainians may seek shelter in Poland in the coming weeks. Another challenge awaits us – we will receive much weaker people whose mental state is much worse. They are emaciated and traumatised. They often come from the poorer social groups, who until now have been afraid to flee into the unknown.

At GoodWorks 24/7, you can fund an oil lamp to bring light and warmth to the people of Ukraine who are plunged into darkness and cold. We strongly urge you to do so. And if you cannot, please share this post so that our appeal for help reaches as many people as possible.
