Joseline needs your help - make the Pinwheel for Life spin for her

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 77% of the population live in extreme poverty for less than $1.90 a day
  • 16% of the country’s population, i.e. over 13 million people, require immediate humanitarian assistance
  • 13,6 million people are deprived of access to safe water sources and proper sanitary and hygienic facilities
  • numerous outbreaks of deadly diseases, including measles, malaria, cholera and Ebola
  • about 10% of all malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occurred here

Santa brought us another miracle today. He has entrusted us with the life of two-month-old Joseline, who although she should weigh 4-6.5 kg by now, is still less than 2. We are fighting for Josepline’s life and we are asking you to become the best, saving-from-hunger Father Christmas for her today.

Joseline is the youngest victim of the fighting that swept through the Ntamugenga area two months ago. A fierce exchange of fire between the rebellion and the Congolese army and falling heavy artillery shells paralysed the daily lives of thousands of civilians trapped on the very front line. Joseline’s mother gave birth to her daughter as bullets whizzed past the window. Terrified people were fleeing. Her most joyful and long-awaited moment came at the worst possible time.

The following days were extremely stressful. Panic, confusion, searching for food, fleeing to the next place and more explosions, again much too close. The paralysing fear for her little daughter’s life meant that her mother was no longer able to breastfeed her. She was running out of breastmilk. There was no chance for substitutes.

Today, both are in our hospital. In addition to her hunger disease, Joseline suffers from a large wound she has on her frail back – a symptom of extreme malnutrition.

Become a Santa Claus today! Fund a therapeutic meal for a child with hunger disease. For our little patients, this is the best gift because it saves lives.
