Dawid’s Last Farewell

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 77% of the population live in extreme poverty for less than $1.90 a day
  • 16% of the country’s population, i.e. over 13 million people, require immediate humanitarian assistance
  • 13,6 million people are deprived of access to safe water sources and proper sanitary and hygienic facilities
  • numerous outbreaks of deadly diseases, including measles, malaria, cholera and Ebola
  • about 10% of all malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occurred here

When I was leaving for tests with other patients, I asked the physiotherapist to bring Dawid some juice – maybe he will wake up from this coma, maybe he will be thirsty?

The news of Dawid’s passing reached Sister Agnieszka the same day. She had fought for him for many months, providing him with treatment that any European hospital could be proud of.

We know that people pass away. It’s the natural order of things, but when death comes for a child, we always feel immense sorrow.

We thank you for every inquiry about his condition, showing us that you cared for Dawid as much as we did. For every fulfilled last wish, every handful of popcorn, pain-relieving medication, and for the warm words of comfort to his father, Elias. His heart now holds an immense void, which is so hard to bear alone. Thank you for being with him in this difficult time.
