We Fulfill Last Wishes...

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 77% of the population live in extreme poverty for less than $1.90 a day
  • 16% of the country’s population, i.e. over 13 million people, require immediate humanitarian assistance
  • 13,6 million people are deprived of access to safe water sources and proper sanitary and hygienic facilities
  • numerous outbreaks of deadly diseases, including measles, malaria, cholera and Ebola
  • about 10% of all malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occurred here

Some diseases are beyond our control, and although the loss of a child always hurts, we do everything we can to make sure every day is lived to the fullest. Sometimes that means higher doses of pain medication, sometimes palliative chemotherapy, and sometimes just a portion of their favorite fries, which in a hospital located in the heart of the Congolese jungle is not an obvious dream.

Sister Agnieszka, seeing the deteriorating condition of a child, sometimes rushes to the market to buy corn, from which she prepares popcorn, loved by the children, late into the night. She takes children who can no longer stand on their own for rides so they can still enjoy the world and not be constantly surrounded by hospital equipment and the steady sound of the heart monitor.

Every child has different dreams, and we try to fulfill them, even if they are their last. We look at their smiling faces and know – every extra hour they can spend with their parents, playing and hugging, is priceless.

If you can afford it on Children’s Day, we encourage you to visit GoodWorks 24/7 and give children a few more good hours, days, or maybe even months full of laughter and comfort. Here, you will only make Good purchases!
