Thanks to your care, we change the lives of young patients

Rwanda

Rwanda is one of the smallest countries on the African continent, and the most densely populated one. There are around 463 inhabitants per 1km2 here! Due to its natural landscape, Rwanda is sometimes referred to as a land of a thousand hills, and due to its history, also a land of a thousand problems.

Overview:
  • around 12 million inhabitants
  • in 1994, it was a place of genocide – in 100 days, about 1 million people of the Tutsi tribe were murdered, 2 million escaped from the country
  • agricultural country – farming generates about 63% of income from export (including coffee, tea, bananas)

Another child has arrived at our hospice in Rwanda. Lucky is just 9 years old. He spent a few days with us before we sent him to India to see doctors who’ve promised to help him.

Lucky doesn’t have any family members who could support him in getting the treatment he so desperately needs. Thanks to the dogged determination of strangers who were taken by his story, he is now on his way to recovery.

The boy started experiencing his first symptoms when he was 6 years old. His mother took him to a health center where he was offered… ibuprofen. When that didn’t help, she did not seek help elsewhere. Once his condition deteriorated, he was taken to the hospital. His mom was not able to cover the cost of treatment, however, so his treatment ended with a consultation.

Recently, a chance encounter with musicians at a concert resulted in an offer for help. Upon hearing about Lucky’s health problems, the band promised to try to find a doctor who would provide the treatment he needed, not just ibuprofen. They weren’t able to find anyone in Rwanda but didn’t give up and contacted doctors in India. After consulting information about the boy’s condition and his latest test results, Indian specialists agreed to take him on as a patient. Prior to his trip, he stayed with us for a few weeks to gain the strength needed to undergo such a long journey. We made sure he received a nutritious diet and lots of rest.

Today he flew to India for the long-awaited surgery. We hope that he will visit us in much better health soon!
