This is What Héritier Looks Like Today!

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 15,6 million people – 18% of the population suffer from hunger
  • 3,4 million children under 5 years are acutely malnourished
  • 41,8% million children under 5 years are stunted
  • 63,2% of children below 5 years of age and 41% of women  15-49 years are anemic

Two weeks ago, we showed you a helpless boy named Héritier who arrived in Ntamugenga in a critically malnourished state. Those two weeks were enough to get him back on his feet. This is what he looks like today!

We invited you then to fight with us, shoulder to shoulder, against hunger, the most deadly problem of our times, recently exacerbated by restrictions resulting from the pandemic. Thanks to you, the hopeless situations these vulnerable individuals find themselves in have a happy ending.

Following a few days of absence from the hospital, it took sister Agnieszka a while to locate Héritier. She finally realized he was the boy she had seen walking around, watching doctors while they work. She couldn’t believe it was him! The boy had made such a radical transformation she recognized him only by his eyes. Even those had changed, though –  the spark and will to live returned. For the first time, sister Agnieszka also heard him speak with confidence.

There are no half measures at Good Factory. We’re not trying to help our patients have a better death – we want them to experience a better life!

Héritier still faces a long road to recovery, but he also has a healthy and hopefully long life full of vitality ahead of him. We expect him to return home in a few weeks. We will do everything we can to make sure he forgets what it felt like to ever feel hungry. We will also make sure he gets an education so that he can create a wonderful future, both for himself and his home country.
