Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 77% of the population live in extreme poverty for less than $1.90 a day
  • 16% of the country’s population, i.e. over 13 million people, require immediate humanitarian assistance
  • 13,6 million people are deprived of access to safe water sources and proper sanitary and hygienic facilities
  • numerous outbreaks of deadly diseases, including measles, malaria, cholera and Ebola
  • about 10% of all malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occurred here

Are there still some among you who have not taken the time to tell others about what is happening around our hospital in Dem. Rep. Congo? Can we ask you once again to share the latest news that has reached us and support the urgent fundraiser to save our charges?

The living conditions of refugees seeking sanctuary in the village continue to deteriorate. Organisations do not reach here with aid. They are simply afraid. We are the only ones here. A few hundred metres from the hospital, more army posts are being set up. No one can predict what will happen next. The dramatic situation has been made worse by the rainy season, which has just started with a bang. Ntamugenga is being inundated by torrential rains. Water and horrendous mud is already everywhere. Tomorrow the school year will not start because classrooms are occupied by refugees. They are living in classrooms, storing their belongings and dwindling food supplies wherever they can.

This is what the road just a few kilometres away from us looks like today. “Currently there is no water at all in the hospital. Not a drop. We are looking for a fault, a leak in the pipes, but what strikes us is that the pipes are already empty at the source, in an area occupied by the rebellion. No one will venture there. Without electricity, the hospital was somehow coping. But without water it cannot cope,” says Sister Agnieszka, the hospital director.

We are asking for your help. An urgent fundraiser is underway on our home page to help us stock up on food, water and medicine. If you do not help these people, no one will. Let’s do everything we can to save them!
