Lebanon

Escalating since October 2019, the political and economic crisis is driving Lebanon to the brink of bankruptcy. The tragic situation has been exacerbated by a gigantic explosion of chemicals stored in Beirut’s seaport. The middle class has virtually ceased to exist. Educated citizens are fleeing hyperinflation, rising unemployment, power cuts and fuel shortages.

Overview:
  • Since the beginning of the crisis, the Lebanese pound has lost more than 90% of of its value
  • Food prices increased by 400 % between January and December 2020.
  • GDP fell by 20.3% (2020)
  • 78% of the Lebanese population (3 million people) live in poverty. Extreme poverty has affected 36% of Lebanese (1.38 million)
  • there is a nationwide shortage of essential medicines
  • prolonged power and fuel shortages (up to 20 hours a day) are paralysing the daily lives of the Lebanese

The situation here is really bad. Iran is threatening retaliation for the killing of the Hamas leader. On top of that, we’re facing a crisis that’s killing us. Very few people can still afford food and medicine. We need to replenish our reserves. Otherwise, we won’t survive if war breaks out,” says Walid, who works with the Good Factory in Lebanon.

We are rushing to aid the Lebanese. The situation is becoming increasingly tense due to Iranian threats of retaliation against Israel, coupled with a lack of essential food and medical supplies. We urgently appeal for help in raising funds to purchase food and medicine for our beneficiaries in Lebanon.

What’s Happening?

Since October last year, Israel has been escalating its offensive in Gaza. Civilians are trapped, with dozens dying daily. Prime Minister Netanyahu is pushing further, threatening Iran and disregarding criticism even from the United States, Israel’s biggest ally.

Iran has vowed revenge for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas. Although Israel hasn’t officially claimed responsibility for the assassination, Netanyahu seems determined to confront Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Middle East has always been a powder keg. Today, regional leaders are running around that keg, dousing themselves with fuel and tossing lit matches at each other. Full-scale war could break out at any moment.

The crisis in Lebanon has turned the lives of its citizens upside down. More and more people are starving, and only a few can afford to buy medicine. Hyperinflation, which the World Bank in 2021 called the greatest economic collapse in modern history, has trapped the Lebanese. There’s no electricity, the healthcare system is failing, and most people can’tl afford basic food supplies. There’s a shortage of everything. The looming threat of a full-scale war in Lebanon is the final blow for the poorest, the lonely, and the sick, who won’t survive without help.

How Are We Helping?

We’ve been in Lebanon for three years. During that time, every month brought more shocking news about the rising dollar exchange rate. We started by providing medicine to 250 chronically ill patients under our care. But now people need more than just medicine—heating oil, basic hygiene products, and food. The medical project quickly turned into providing basic humanitarian aid,” says Anna Kieniewicz.

“We try to give everyone not only medication but also what they need most. Currently, that includes food, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene products. Everything is in short supply,” she explains.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces exchange fire daily. A war between Iran and Israel will naturally drag Lebanon’s Hezbollah into open conflict, further devastating an already crippled nation.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s declaration that he is ready to fight “on all fronts against the axis of Iranian evil” has ignited the powder keg. We must quickly respond to the call from our Lebanese friends and replenish the supplies that could soon be critical in saving the lives of our beneficiaries.

We need €4,000 to secure food and medicine supplies for our patients for the coming weeks. If we can raise more, we will be able to save even more lives. Join our fundraising effort. Every cent counts, and every donation will go towards saving Lebanon.
